Gideon vs. Wainwright: A Legal Frontier for Equal Justice

This was done in 2001 by an 8th grader from Pensacola. She won 1st place in Florida and 1st at the National History Fair. She researched her topic extensively, traveling to Panama City (where the Gideon v. Wainwright case begins) and even interviewed the original trial judge. She also interviewed Justice Lewis on our Court regarding the impact of this decision within the legal community. She was the first researcher to find a copy of the jury verdict from Gideon’s first trial - he had two trials and the trial that occurred after this monumental decision where he was afforded an attorney he was found not guilty! (--from SCMS parent Tricia Knox)
